As a golf course is a living thing, it changes dramatically as the years go by, and is not a static entity. Soils, drainage systems, irrigation, bunkers, and turf grasses all tend toward decreased quality over time. The increasing maturity of trees surrounding a golf course, changes in maintenance practices, excessive golf play, or the direct influence of numerous greens committees may have far-reaching and detrimental effects on the quality of a golf course, resulting in the need for renovation.

The level of JMP experience in the area of golf course renovation and remodeling is extensive. With projects as small as the renovation of a single green, bunker, or tee complex, others have included the re-construction of the entire golf course. JMP’s designers offer renovation and remodeling services that sometimes encompass long-range master planning programs, which may be implemented in several phases over years, to simple field-sketch designs for the alteration of an individual golf course feature.

Renovation design rarely offers the blank canvas that is characteristic of new golf course design. Brian Costello, Mark Hollinger, and Bob Moore know that a successful renovation must strike a delicate balance between the character of the existing layout, and the appearance of the newly created or updated features. Often the best solution requires the subjugation of JMP’s work to the style of the original designer. In our view, many great golf courses, have been seriously compromised by the introduction of a different bunkering style, or forced contouring which bears absolutely no resemblance to the underlying character of the existing golf course.

“In undertaking a renovation or remodeling project, we are first and foremost committed to improving the playing experience and appearance of the golf course. At the same time, however, we never lose sight of the underlying qualities which exist in the layout, and our efforts must successfully enhance these qualities.”
Bob Moore, Jr.
